Britannia is one of the oldest symbols of Britain and the British people. When the Roman Empire invaded and clashed with the tribes already living in the British Isles, the Ancient Greek term Pretani was modified in Latin to Pretannia as the name of the province under Roman control. Translated into English, the term Britannia came to be used in reference to the region and its people.

Today, Britannia serves as the female personification of Britain. Although Emperor Hadrian first issued Roman coins in 119 AD with her image, the first British issuance of coins with Britannia on the reverse side first occurred in 1687 during the reign of King Charles II. Britannia remained popular on circulation currency following the union of British and Scottish crowns legally in 1707 and is now the face of the nations modern bullion coinage.
